Statement on Affordable Care Act Court Rulings

Statement

The decision by the D.C. Circuit Court today to withhold subsidies from those who access their health insurance through the federal exchange is among the latest attempts to undermine the Affordable Care Act. Mainers--and those in other states participating in the federal exchange--should not be punished for the state's failure to set up its own exchange. The goal of the ACA, as well as the result we've seen in the last year, is making health insurance available and affordable for as many people as possible regardless of where they live.

While I'm disappointed to see one court's ruling give credence to desperate attempts to weaken a law that has put healthcare coverage within reach for millions of Americans, I am confident that the sound reasoning behind the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals' decision to uphold the subsidies will prevail.

While these cases continue to make their way through the courts, Mainers should rest assured that there are no immediate changes to the costs of their coverage.
